Cornwall Fuel Bank

Cornwall is in the top 10 fuel insecure areas of England, with a massive 36,000 households living in fuel poverty and 15% of residents finding it a problem to source the money they need to pay for utility bills.

It’s hard to understand that here in the UK there are people who don’t have access to basic household needs. In response to this issue, Feeding Britain in partnership with the npower Foundation are raising funds for a Fuel Bank® in Cornwall, to ensure that fewer Cornish families have to choose between heating their home and feeding their family.

The Issue

Behind the idyllic Cornish holiday destinations and famous restaurants many people are struggling to get by and put decent food on the table.

We know that food bank users are often experiencing both food and fuel crises, and for many who are forced to make the decision between heating and eating, they choose to forgo the fuel. This then leaves them without the facilities to cook the food they are given by the food bank, as well as without access to energy for other basics many of us take for granted like lighting and hot water.

How Fuel Banks help

Over the summer of 2018 we ran an incredibly successful crowdfunding campaign, surpassing our target and raising £33,540. Thank you to everyone who supported us by making pledges and sharing the campaign!

Thanks to the show of community support, the Cornwall Fuel Bank® will be able to provide a crucial lifeline to local families, offering emergency fuel to over 1000 people in need alongside their food parcel. The fuel bank will be based in the independent food banks run by Transformation CPR which supports anywhere from 400-700 people per month.

The fuel vouchers will give people the breathing space they need to get through the immediate crisis, and find the longer term help they need. Everyone accessing Fuel Bank®services will be offered longer term wraparound support, such as community involvement, employment and skills development, and advice services. This support goes beyond one-time emergency provision and empowers people to lift themselves out of a crisis and in to long term stability.

Reclaim Gift Aid

Gift Aid It!Add 25% more to your donation at no cost to you. A Gift Aid declaration allows Feeding Britain to claim tax back on eligible donations. It means that for every £1 you donate to Feeding Britain we can claim back 25p, at no extra cost to you.

By ticking the "Yes" box, I agree I would like Feeding Britain to reclaim the tax on all qualifying donations I have made, as well as any future donations, until I notify them otherwise. I understand that if I pay less Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax than the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all my donations in that tax year I may be asked to pay any difference. I understand that Feeding Britain will reclaim 25p of tax on every £1 that I give.

What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid does not cost you a penny more, but can add an additional 25p to every £1 you donate. When Feeding Britain receives a donation from a UK taxpayer, we're entitled to claim an amount of tax (calculated at the basic rate of income tax in that year) paid on that donation. Once you have given your permission for us to do this on your behalf, there is no need for you to do anything else.

All that is required is that you must be a taxpayer and that would have paid or will pay sufficient Income and/or Capital Gains Tax to cover all the Gift Aid claimed on all your donations in that tax year. Please note that it is your responsibility to pay any difference.

The amount of tax we claim will be 25% of the total value of your donations in that tax year. Furthermore, if you are a higher taxpayer, you are also entitled to claim the difference between the basic rate which we will claim and the amount of tax you have actually paid. For further details on how you can do this, please contact your tax office. If your tax situation changes and your gifts will no longer be eligible for the Gift Aid scheme please contact us and we will amend your record accordingly.
