Hunger among older people

Hunger among older people is too often an invisible issue. We are working to highlight the challenges facing older people at risk of hunger, and identify ways that this can be addressed.

Highlighting the challenges faced by older people

“23% of over 60s (3 million people) have skipped meals to cut back on costs, and 42% of over 60s (5.8 million people) struggle to afford basic items such as food, gas and electricity.”  – ICM Cut Backs Survey, Later Life in the United Kingdom, Age UK (Via Malnutrition Task Force)

We supported the APPG on Hunger to gather evidence on this issue for the 2017 inquiry on hunger and malnutrition among older people, and will be working with them to help put the recommendations into practice.

Innovations to support older people

Feeding Britain is also working through our local pilots to identify and test practical interventions which can help to alleviate and reduce hunger and malnutrition among older people.

For example, in Lambeth, we are piloting a new approach to improve the way that GP surgeries connect with community food projects, to ensure vulnerable patients get the support they need. Feeding Derbyshire is trialling a scheme to deliver affordable food boxes to people in rural Derbyshire, including older people who may find it difficult to access food shops.

We will be sharing the evidence and learning from these pilots with others at national level, so that successful approaches can be scaled up nationally.
